Universal Design – Let’s Do Our Part :)

What is Universal Design? UD refers to “design for everyone”. For a healthy human being like you and me, it’s easy to walk up and down a flight of stairs or get on and off the bus or train. But for people with limited mobility, it is not as easy. These include the physically handicapped, parents with infants in a pram and the elderly.

Just imagine…

If you’re on a wheelchair, and you have to get to a place by yourself without any help from others, are you able to do so with our current facilities? Will you be able to take the bus or train? What if you need to buy something in a mall, but you get there only to realise there’s a flight of stairs at the entrance with no ramps or lifts in sight? What if there are no handrails at the side of the ramps or stairs?

Such difficulties are not limited to the handicapped. As a mother, I completely understand how challenging it can be to bring your child out.

If you’re a parent with an infant who still needs to be wheeled around in a pram, there will be times where you have to carry the pram with your child in it, and walk up a flight of stairs because there are no ramps or escalators nearby. Taking the bus can be quite troublesome because you have to:

1) carry your infant from the pram
2) make sure your bag doesn’t slip off your shoulder
3) retract the pram and carry it up the bus
4) make sure your pram does not fall over on the bus
And when you alight, you have to do everything in reverse!

Even in shopping malls, there have been times when I was unable to use the washroom because I could not squeeze into a toilet cubicle with a pram. There were also times when I was unable to breastfeed because the only nursing room available in the mall was occupied. As a mother I am also worried about the safety of my child. Sometimes, I find that adult toilets can be too high and dangerous for my child to use.

As we age, our bodies also become frail and we lose the strength and vitality to do the things we used to do. Running up a flight of stairs was no problem when we were young but for a 90 year-old man, he risks falling down and fracturing his bones.

A lot is being done to help these different groups of people. In recent years, we have seen an increase in accessible facilities. However, more can be done. We can include Universal Design in more places.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) would like to drive home the importance of Universal Design (UD), and to raise awareness, they have come up with the Universal Design Short Film Competition. Participate in the competition and you could win $5,000 in cash prizes!

Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE.

Taking photos has been a part of my life ever since I became a mum.
I always want to make sure (or at least I tried to) to have every moment of my kids captured! Having a smartphone with the normal camera feature is definitely the most accessible and convenient! But the thing is, the resolution of it is not as good as I expected it to be. I own a DSLR but it’s too bulky for me to carry around with, especially having to carry a 14-months-old girl and a heavy diaper bag. And also, I can’t share the photos on the go….
Thus, I need a smartphone, with a really good built-in camera!

Retailing at SGD$798 (without contract), there are 3 colours available (electric BLUE, charcoal BLACK, shimmery WHITE).
I chose the electric BLUE because I love how striking and vivid the colour is, which I’m sure I won’t have to dig into my bag just to find between all the blacks. Light and slim at only 20.2mm, yet it comes with a retractable 10X optical zoom lens! With a 20.7MP BSI CMOS Sensor, it snaps crystal clear shots with beautiful colours and with a powerful Xenon flash. Also with the Android™ 4.4 (Kit Kat) platform, everything will work seamlessly!
I’m really excited to try this smartphone out!

The grip for this phone is comfortable!
Not too huge that I can’t hold it comfortably with one hand.
Now let’s go into the different features of the camera-specialised smartphonephone.
The Camera app is the most important to me as like what I’ve said, I am constantly taking photos of my kids, and many random other things.
With 28 Smart Modes to choose from, you can choose whatever suits you best for the shoot.

I have tried:

>Kids shot

What’s so cool about this Kids shot mode is there are a few sounds for you to choose from, to attract the attention of the child..

>Selfie Alarm
( which takes 3 shots automatically with Beauty Mode after you’ve touched the screen to set where you wanna appear in the shot )
It's really cool!

Chose this out from the 3 shots taken : )

>Beauty Face mode
( with the front camera )

In the moving car......

I really love how clear my selfie look taken with the front camera!

>Continuous Shot
I really love this mode as with just one click, it snaps 30 photos at one go!
Perfect for mummies who wanna snap photos of their active ones, like me!!!
(posting just 5 for now)

>Food mode
Trying this Food mode out before digging in to the yummy dinner!

The resolution of the photos is so clear and vivid in colours! It makes the food look even yummier and totally picture perfect to be uploaded to my social media platforms!

I am still trying out different modes from my Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE and I’ll be updating the photos of the other modes I have tried in the next blog post : )

Most of the time I’m just using AUTO mode.
Just look at how beautiful this photo is using the Auto mode!
I can never ever take a photo which looks this good with my current smartphone!
With the 20.7MP back camera, I have to say I’m sold!

With a unique AF/AE Separation (Auto Focus/ Auto Exposure) Feature,
I can drag the arrow to select my desired exposure point!

And the photo which I snapped!
The resolution of the photo is comparable to my Digi-camera!!!

Here’s a photo my son took of me with the Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE camera flash,
which uses a special Xenon Flash.
It is brighter and travels further than LEDs which most smartphones use.
He’s quite a distance away from me when taking this photo and I’m surprise that the photo didn’t turn out dim! : )

I am now confident to say that I can leave home without my bulky Digi-camera, and with just the Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE!

Before I end this blog post, I wanna feature this APP!

With the Kids Mode on, I can limit the device usage time and also set the apps which I have added while setting up this mode for Kayliss.

I can also add videos for Kayliss to watch : )

And the other cool features in this Kids Mode.

I can let Kayliss draw, sing, and take photos. (training her to take photos of me, haha!)

And best of all, I do not need to worry about her exiting the Kids Mode and then deleting and moving my apps ( like what she’s doing to my previous smartphone! ) because……

She’ll need a pin to close this Kids Mode. HAHA!

For more info about the Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE

I’m seriously in love with my Samsung GALAXY K zoom LTE and I bring it everywhere I go!

I’m definitely going to capture many more moments of my kids with it!
Thank you Samsung for the gorgeous and great smartphone!!

Innisfree Pure Green Baby line...

Received 3 products from innisfree in my mail 2 months back.

innisfree is a naturalism-orientated cosmetics brand created in 2000.
For a cosmetics lover like me, I have only heard of the brand for its cosmetics products.
Now, innisfree has the lastest offering for infants and children :)
I rarely apply any lotion and cream for my children since young because I fear of allergies for them.
Not even baby lotion.
But after knowing that the Pure Green Baby line from innisfree is carefully formulated with organic Jeju Green Tea that has proven mild and suitable for babies,
with organic-certified in compliance with ECOCERT, a French organic certification organization,
I know I can give it a try.

Pure Green Baby Lotion
(200ml), $38
"An organic-certified lotion formulated with organic Jeju green tea ingredients, shea butter and sunflower oil that acts as a shield of moisture over the baby’s skin. Contains 100% natural ingredients, 11.4% organic ingredients, and is under the 10-Free System – the lotion is free of 1,4-doixane, animal ingredients, mineral oil, colourants, parabens, artificial fragrance, formaldehyde, acrylamide, benzophenone and silicon."

I love the consistency of this Pure Green Baby lotion!
It's not too thick, and not too thin in texture.
It gets absorbed into the skin fast and does not leave a sticky film on the skin.

Kayliss at 14 months old is super hyper,
always moving and can never be willing to sit for more than a few seconds.
In order to have her sit down for me to apply the lotion, I have to let her get involved with what I'm doing.
So I let her apply the lotion on herself :)

There is a nice citrus (I'm not good at describing scent so don't quote me for that) scent to it but it's not overpowering.
Overall, I like this product to be applied after bath time.

Pure Green Baby Mom’s Touch Milk Oil
 (150ml), $32
"A soft, milky baby massage oil containing organic Jeju green tea that soothes a baby’s dryness-prone skin. Contains 85.9% natural ingredients, and is under the 9-Free System – the Milk Oil is free of 1,4-doixane, animal ingredients, mineral oil, colourants, parabens, artificial fragrance, formaldehyde, benzophenone and acrylamide"

I'm kinda surprise with the product that I pumped out of the bottle as I thought it'll be really in oil form.
but instead, it's in lotion  form.

Kayliss feeling the texture...

For the Pure Green Baby Mom’s Touch Milk Oil,
the consistency is even thinner than the Pure Green Baby lotion.
It spreads easily on my palms and it's really smooth when applied on the skin.
It gets absorbed into the skin really fast too!

There is a really light scent to it.
And as I spread the milk oil on my palm, the scent seems to disappear....
I like this product to be applied throughout the day, whenever necessary.

Pure Green Baby Cream
(100ml), $38
"An organic-certified baby cream that provides deep hydration and relief to dry skin. Contains 99.4 % natural ingredients, 11.4% organic ingredients, and is part of the 10-Free System. The cream is free of 1,4-doixane, animal ingredients, mineral oil, colourants, parabens, artificial fragrance, formaldehyde, acrylamide, benzophenone and silicon."

For the consistency of the Pure Green Baby Cream,
It's much thicker than the 2 products I have mentioned above.
Even though it's in cream form, application on the skin is smooth too.
Just that the texture of it is thicker.
I don't really like the scent of this product as it is quite overpowering when first applied, and though the scent gets lighter, it still lingers.
And the scent reminds me the smell of sunblock.
But I like how moisturizing it is on Kayliss's, and my skin.
(FYI, I used the products on myself first, and then try it out on Kayliss before I come out with the review.)
I use this product only at night.
I use it on Kayliss at night, after her last wash up before going to bed.
As Kaylene is wearing long sleeves, the scent don't bother me that much.
I recommend it to be used at night since the texture is much thicker.

Both Kayliss and I have been using the 3 products mentioned above for 2 months & counting,
and neither of us have encounter any allergies.
Which is a big THUMBS UP!
So I highly recommend it.... even adults can use it!

Can't wait to try more products from innisfree!

Thank you innisfree for the products from Pure Green Baby line...
